A Trip To Binondo : Ho-Land Hopia And Bakery and Eng Bee Tin Chinese Deli

20160207_165618t

Unfortunately, everything must come to an end haha. Today, I decided to put both Ho-Land Bakery and Eng Bee Tin in one post which will also serve as my final entry for my Binondo series. A Binondo Trip will not be completed without buying for Pasalubong (is the Filipino tradition of travellers bringing gifts from their destination to people back home.). Aside from the Lucky Charms, Chinese Delicacies are one of the most common things you can buy from Binondo and Ho-land Bakery and Eng Bee Tin have high reputation when it comes to their yummy delicacies!20160207_165636tHo-land Hopia and Bakery is situated in 551 E.T. Yuchengco St. cor. Carvajal (a few blocks away from Sincerity Restaurant ). They also have branches in Quezon City, CM Recto, Gilmore St and Congresional Ave.20160207_165710tHo-land probably stands for Hopia Land which has been around since 1960s! Ho-land, for many hopia lovers, remains the standard for these Chinese baked goodies. Upon doing a research, I also learned that HOPIA derives from two Chinese Words, HO means Good while PIA means Cake or Pastry. 20160207_165903tAside From Hopia, Ho-Land also caters other products like Tikoy, Prosperity Cakes and these Koi-Fishes (i don’t know what exactly these Koi-Fishes shaped items are but I find them so cute). I also bought Fortune Cookies for the first time and I also saw a lot of Chinese herbs and spices too)111111111Another famous shop in Binondo is the Eng Bee Tin which is also known for their yummy Chinese Delicacies most especially their Ube-Flavored Hopia and Tikoy. In fact, they established a bigger shop known as MR Ube that caters their best selling hopia and tikoy. 20160207_170718tMr. Chua Chiu Hong established Eng Bee Tin in a simple stall in the heart of Ongpin, Manila. Since then, the business grew and has become a popular destination in Binondo!20160207_170724tBecause of its popularity, you are often being welcomed by a huge and long queue of people! It is often being featured in many tv shows too!1545802_10202273471111493_569876460_ntThey also have this Giant Tikoy on display every Chinese New Year!15484415712_0f5be886f4_otSo there, Our Binondo trip is finally (whew…) over! I would love to explore more restaurants soon! So for those who missed my Binondo entries, here’s a quick recap!

hmmm, i wonder what the “ho-pia” are!!! looks like some puff pastry with mung bean paste fillings inside?? and tikoy, hahaha, i think i means “sweet cake”.. as for the prosperity cake, yes, we mean the same thing over here, though we call the “fatt kou” or “huat koy”..

ah, i saw the last photo and i can read the chinese words on the packaging.. yes, the “ho pia” is what i am thinking it to be.. 🙂

Hopia. Eng Bee Tin dominates and you could see multiple branches in Chinatown. I haven’t been there for a long time, I suspect I will be soon as there is business to transact and one of the things I will do is walk around the same streets I did when I was a kid living near that area.

Not a fan of hopia, but I am always intrigued by Binondo. I love old places, especially Chinatowns! Can you perhaps tell me where the best dim sum is, in your opinion?

This post takes me back to my wanderings around Binondo. 🙂 I’ve been there several times but I enjoy the area, especially during Chinese New Year. I prefer the warm food though and not much the pastries. I like to buy the haw flakes, however.

I haven’t tried Ho-land, just Baker’s Fair and Eng Bee Tin. A tourist guide told me though that Ho-land’s hopias are better tasting than EBT, is that true?

You sure discovered many things in Binondo, far more than I did. Great job!

Oh this is sad!!! I read all your Binondo articles hahaha!!! I want more. 🙂 I like Eng Bee Tin hopia mongo and ube. The lite version makes me feel less guilty too! I’ve tasted Ho-land’s but I just like EBT more 🙂

The Koi-Fishes looks very intriguing, is it a real fish or just a cake in the shape of a fish? I have been to China but I didn’t try many of their pastries, for some reason I didn’t really find them in supermarkets. The most common sweet in Beijing was a jelly type of cube fruit flavoured.

Whenever I visit Binondo, I always drop by Eng Bee Tin’s store because my granny loves their hopia very much. I’ve seen the giant Tikoy too. If only I can take it home.

It looks like a very nice trip to Binondo! Been there twice, and yeah, it’s really historical, but the public transpo drivers can be very tricky. I remember visiting a really interesting buddhist temple in the vicinity. And yes, love Eng Bee Tin hopia and other delicacies!
