Creative Flatlay and Color Mixing Workshop #FaberCastellBloggersDay
I spent my last weekend with a bunch of colors and a pinch of creativity after attending the recently concluded “Creative Flatlay and Color Mixing” workshop with Ms Tippy Pelayo-Go of The Googly Gooeys. The event was organized by Nuffnang Philippines in partnership with Faber Castell Philippines. I really admire those amazing Instagram accounts and how they put so much creativity with their pictures through flatlays and how they remained faithful with their theme (mine was such a mess haha).
The Nuffnang Blogger Workshop which was aptly tagged as the Faber Castell Bloggers Day was held last 28th of October at Acceler8, Greenbelt Makati. The workshop was sponsored by Faber Castell Philippines and it featured Ms Tippy Pelayo-Go of The Googly Gooeys who just shared her knowledge and experiences in blogging, her humble beginnings and some interesting insights about designing, color mixing and how to make your Instagram more appealing through creative flat lay photography.
“The Googly Gooeys”
Interestingly, from a simple web comic site, the Googly Gooeys dramatically evolved into a successful art and design blog. It features a real life couple ~ Tipsy and Ponggo where they both share their random musings. The blog has been featured and recognized both locally and internationally for their marvelous works. They are also behind some noteworthy murals in the metro including the heart mural in Serendra and also the recently unveiled murals in Ayala Malls Cloverleaf. Now Ms Tippy generously shared her skills and some amazing tips to us, bloggers, to unleash our inner creativity and also to help us transform our Instagram even more engaging through her creative flatlay photography workshop.
As soon as the event begins, we were given some artsy stuffs from Faber Castell which were used for the workshop. The event kicked off with the Color Mixing workshop. A work sheet were given to us and we were asked to mix two or more colors to produce a new one! With our Faber Castell Connector Paint Box, we started playing with colors. The workshop unleashed the inner kid in me and simply can’t hide my excitement that time as we all experiment with our coloring tools. Who would have thought that you can come up with various shades of green by simply adding a pinch of other colors to it?
We concluded the color mixing workshop by learning various Watercolor washes. We learned four different techniques including the flat wash, wet in wet, dry brush and the graded wash. These techniques can be applied in so many ways. They can be used effectively as backdrops and also with other artworks. After taking a short break, we were all encouraged to get some props for our Creative flatlay session.
“What Is Flat Lay Photography”
Flat Lay Photography as what the term suggests is a photography technique where you lay down items on a flat surface and shoot them on a top down perspective. This is known to be the easiest yet most creative way to transform your Instagram to an eye catching profile. This might look so easy but there’s really many things to consider in order to execute this method perfectly and effectively. Ms Tippy shared some awesome techniques on how to produce Instagram-worthy flatlays.
I learned that choosing your own color palette is very important. You should know which colors are perfectly blending together. You should also take advantage of the props and the lighting but never overdone it. Sometimes, lesser details are more appealing. The possibilities for flat lay photography is seemingly limitless as everyone can come up with so many engaging themes and concepts. You just need to add a pinch of creativity , get the right angle and viola! You can now have a picture-worthy photo for your Instagram!
There goes my first Flat lay attempt highlighting our finished art work from the Color Mixing workshop. It was so nice playing with random materials.
Here’s another attempt and this time, I made use of my mom’s ceramic displays and the colorful Faber Castell Ball pens and Faber Castell Basic Color Sketch Set.
Here’s another one playing with various shades of green.
It was a very productive workshop indeed. It was fun and entertaining and for someone like me who struggles a lot on how to make my Instagram more appealing, i will definitely apply these techniques on my account!
An overwhelming amount of Faber Castell products were displayed during the event and it just reminds me of my student days and those art projects that I used to do with my friends!
We were also given a chance to see this limited edition Karl Box by Faber Castell. The KARLBOX is a unique homage to Karl Lagerfeld as well as an expression of the symbiosis between artist and tool. It is divided into several drawers filled with a collection of coloring tools that are specially designed for this limited edition item. Karl Lagerfeld by the way is creative director/ designer behind Chanel!
There’s only 2,500 of Karl Box made and each comes with a serial number plates and certificate of authenticity. The worth is also shocking actually as it is cost around Php150,000. Wow!
With Ms Tippy Pelayo-Go and with fellow blogger Bea of Beadeegee.com and on the far left is the Karl Box! Feel free to follow their accounts below

This is something I need to practice more on – flatlay photography. Mine looks so much like it was a kid that took the photo. I like this activity you attended. Learning flat-lay and getting your coloring fix at the same time.
I’ve tried flat-lays and it’s more difficult than it looks to make them look good. I love the colors in yours and wish mine looked half that good. It would be so fun to attend a workshop!
Seems like apretty useful workshop. Had never heard of Flat Lay Photography. Guess there is a first time for everything! Need to try this!
This sounds like my idea of heaven! I love art products and I LOVE flatlay photography, it’s the only style I can really do and it’s such fun to create scenes. Fab post 🙂
