Our Lady Of Sorrows Parish In Pasay

Last month, Legion of Mary celebrated their 76th founding anniversary here in the Philippines. July marks the Awareness month of Legionaries nationwide and part of the special activities of our Praesidium is the annual pilgrimage tour. This year , in celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, we decided to visit the five designated Jubilee churches in Manila and obtain our very own Pilgrim passport and certificate. Unlike our Batangas Pilrimage last year, we only have five churches on our list so we are not really in a hurry. Manila on the first place is not too far from Cavite. Our first destination is the Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Pasay.IMG_0197ttOur Lady Of Sorrows Parish is established  in 1941 by the Society of St. Paul. As you can see, the building is not that old but it actually has a huge historical significance. This is the church where Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino and Corazon Aquino was married in 1953. They even took former President Ramon Magsaysay as one of their principal sponsors.20160724_085051tThe church has a very simple facade. It has a huge carved image on the center depicting Our Lady of Sorrows (sorrowful Mary at the foot of Jesus’ cross along with Saint John).

The parish by the way is also the headquarters of the Pasay Chapter of the National Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL).20160724_090743_Richtone(HDR)ttThe main altar of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish with a statue of La Pieta in the center (on top of the tabernacle). La Pieta is a Renaissance-inspired sculpture that depicts the body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion.

How to get here:

In between Taft Avenue and Roxas Boulevard, from Buendia (Gil Puyat) northbound from Roxas Blvd. towards Taft and Makati, take a right turn after the first intersection before Mercury Drug and the Church is less than 500 meters from the intersection.  If you are southbound on Buendia you have to cross Buendia or by a vehicle go around a U-turn slot so that you can go northbound

Ay it looks bigger from the inside. I remember passing by this church in the past pero from the outside it looks really small. Good luck as you complete all the church visits.

The altar with La Pieta looks so refreshing in white. If I have problems, I would just stare at it and feel ok.

That’s a beautiful church! So many gorgeous details and it’s surprisingly light inside . I like that so much white is used there.

Nice church. I come from Italy so when it comes to churches I’m always curious to see other architect styles.

The facade of the church is so unassuming I was surprised by the beauty of what’s inside. The fans though kinda obstruct the way to the altar 🙁

My parents’ church wedding was here! We would often kid my mom about the reason they chose to be married in Our Lady of Sorrows when both of them were living in Quiapo and not in Pasay! I think you know what we meant, haha! But kidding aside, I am nostalgic when I see this church, especially in their old wedding photos, because my dad has already passed.

I’m a pure blood Pasay-eña but I’ve never known that this existed in our city. (I should go out and explore more of my home town.) I’ve been taken to a pilgrim once or twice by my lola, but as a child I would always be the one to ask questions:
“Why would we need to do this?”
“If we don’t finish the pilgrim, will God be made at me and not listen to me anymore?” (I was definitely that kid. LOL)

The parish looks great and well maintained. I’m still just spooked out as before with the Santos. :S
Hope you’ll accomplish all of your church visits!

I love going to churches. Aside from renewing my faith and unloading my mind, it’s a good historical, cultural and artistic tour.

I haven’t really been here yet. When we schedule our visita iglesia, it’s always in Rizal. I think there was a time we did Manila but we never had this in one of our itineraries. Anyway, maybe next time.

It’s good to see churches are well preserved and such is really interesting to visit. We also have an old church here too that has so many historical facts to share.

That’s such a beautiful church! I am always at Pasay but have never really been to this church. I always try to visit Baclaran church though when I’m around the area.

Wonderful! I’ve heard about this church before in Pasay. But I haven’t been there. The only church I’ve been to near the place is in Baclaran. But I hope to visit PAsay Church and hear of its stories!

I love visiting churches. Especially in small villages when on my travels. This one looks so simple on the outside but the inside is really beautiful! The altar is outstanding!
