The 41st Intramuros Grand Marian Procession / IGMP 2022

After two years, the highly anticipated Intramuros Grand Marian Procession was held and graced the busy streets of the walled city of Manila. Intramuros Grand Marian Procession is one of the biggest Marian events in the country where hundreds of prominent Marian images from different parts of the country are being gathered for a religious parade. This tradition is done in honor of the feast of the Immaculate Concepcion (which is every 8th of December – which is now officially declared as a national Holiday). The annual procession has become a tradition and is part of Intramuros’ rich history since 1619 but the tradition was once again resurrected in the late 70s and early 80s where the term Grand Marian Procession was coined.

Due to the global pandemic caused by the COVID-19 virus, the event was cancelled for two consecutive years (2020 and 2021 respectively). Despite the cancellation, several online and live activities are being held as an alternative celebration. Intramuros Grand Marian Procession is a religious tradition that is wonderfully preserved all through the years. In this celebration, some of the prominent Marian images (canonically and episcopally crowned Marian images as well as those that are privately owned) will grace the street of Intramuros along with marching bands, folk dancers and of course the hundreds of devotees who traveled all the way from their respective towns just to join the procession.

Finally, after two years, the much-awaited gathering was finally allowed. The 41st Intramuros Grand Marian Procession was successfully celebrated last December 4, 2022. Unlike the previous celebrations though, especially the 2019 procession where more than 100 images participated, this year only features 30 plus images. These Marian images, however, are all Canonically crowned. These are Marian images that received papal bull of pontifical coronation granted by the pope and carried out by either his papal legate, the pontiff, or a papal nuncio. Currently (as of writing) there are 49 Canonically crowned Marian images in the country and four more images are scheduled to be crowned next year.

Without further ado, here are the images from the recently concluded 41st Intramuros Grand Marian Procession. (listed in order)

San Andres de Manila. The procession starts with the image of Saint Andrew the Apostle, the Patron Saint of Manila.

San Jose de Manila. Last 2019, Tata Hosep of Las Piñas is the one participated the event.

Santa Ana de Hagonoy of Bulacan. The third non-Marian image to join the event is the image of Saint Anne, Mary’s mother. The image of Santa Ana of Hagonoy depicts Saint Anne teaching the young Mary the scriptures. She was currently enshrined on the National Shrine of Saint Anne in Hagonoy, Bulacan

Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de Turumba. Our Lady of Turumba of Pakil, Laguna is probably one of the most prominent Marian images in the country. The image receives the decree of Canonical coronation last May of 2021 andf the coronation rites will take place on September next year.

Nuestra Señora de la Merced of Tarlac. Just like the Turumba, the image receives the decree of Canonical coronation this year and the coronation rites is set to take place this coming February 2023.
Maria Auxilladora/ Mary Help of Christians of Parañaque City. The image was recently crowned last May.
Patrocinio de Maria of Boljo-on Cebu. The image was recently crowned last April 2022.

Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Jaro. The official replica of the image joined the Intramuros Grand Marian Procession for the first time. The image was canonically crowned on February 20, 1981.

Nuestra Señora de Salvacion de Joroan of Tiwi, Albay also joined the procession for the first time. The image was canonically crowned on August 1976. The original image graced the procession.

The procession concludes with the image of the Festejada, Nuestra Señora, La Inmaculada Concepcion, Mater Purisima. Known to be the Patroness of the Philippines.

It is also interesting to mention that one of the spectators of the event is Vice President Sara Duterte. She was accompanied by her mother, Elizabeth Zimmerman.
