The 39th Intramuros Grand Marian Procession #IGMP2018
Over a hundred Marian images once again graced the historical street of Intramuros last Sunday (December 2, 2018) for the annual Intramuros Grand Marian Procession. It is probably the biggest Marian event in the country where different Marian images from different provinces were gathered.
The Intramuros Grand Marian Procession is celebrated annually every first Sunday of December. This tradition is done in honor of the feast of the Immaculate Concepcion (which is every 8th of December – which is now officially declared as a national Holiday by the way). The annual procession has become a tradition and is part of Intramuros’ rich history since 1619 but the tradition was once again resurrected in the late 70s and early 80s where the term Grand Marian Procession was coined.
The tradition was preserved and the way the event is celebrated has changed throughout the years. Today, the annual grand procession is still being done where the most prominent Marian images are being paraded alongside with marching bands, folk dancers and of course the hundreds of devotees who travel all the way from their respective towns just to join the parade.
Venerated Marian images, canonically and episcopally crowned and also those that are privately owned as well as the “festejada” or the image of the Immaculate Concepcion graced this grand 3-kilometer long procession.
Without any further ado, here are some of the Marian images from the recently concluded 39th Intramuros Grand Marian Procession.
