Su Asuncion y Nuestra Devocion, Our Lady of the Assumption Exhibit in Bulakan

Did you know that the town of Bulakan, Bulacan was once part of Tondo, Manila? In 1575, Bulakan was established as a visita of Tondo and it is not part of Calumpit which is already established as an Alcadia (province) by that time. On April 30, 1578, Bulakan town was officially established by the Augustinians with Fray Diego Vivar as its first prior and the convent was dedicated to initially San Agustin. The church of Bulakan was completed in August 1578. The town of Bulakan was then proclaimed a separate parish from Tondo and it was during this time that the first image of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion was placed at the façade of the church and numerous miracles were attributed to the image since then.

One of the earliest known miracles of the Virgin happened during the British Invasion where it is said that while the British forces are preparing for their meals near the vicinity of the church, the food suddenly turned into worms that the forces immediately flee from Bulakan. The miraculous image of Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion was episcopally crowned on November 28, 2020. In celebration of the town’s 444th founding anniversary, the Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Nuestra Senora de la Asuncion, the Recamaderos de Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion of Cofradia de Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion organized an exhibit, showcasing a collection of replica images of Our Lady of the Assumption.

Entitled “Su Asuncion y Nuestra Devocion”, the exhibit aims to showcase the growing devotion to Our Lady of the Assumption. Some of the images in the exhibit played an integral part to the rich history of Bulakan. The Asuncion exhibit officially opened last July 31, 2022 and is scheduled to run until August 13, 2022.
