A Trip To Binondo : Sto Cristo De Longos De Binondo

P2073166tHere’s a quick post in relation with our recent trip in Binondo. It’s not actually a visit but more of a stop-over. If you happen to pass by the corner of Ongpin and Tomas Pinpin St, you will notice a small street-side temple shrine where people can be seen burning joss (insence) sticks and make offerings. This is the Sto Cristo De Longos De Binondo! The original image of Sto Cristo De Longos was actually displayed near the side entrance of church of Binondo but you can also find two nearby shrines in Binondo; one located  in San Nicholas District and other one is this Shrine located in Ongpin.P2073169t
The miraculous image has an interesting story. It was said that in the 16th Century, a deaf mute Chinese was getting a pail of water in the Barrio of Longos (this is where the shrine in San Nicholas District is located). Upon pulling the pail out, he saw a blackened corpus of the Crucified Christ. Immediately, he was healed of his muteness and began shouting about his discovery. The venerated image was first enshrine to Capilla de San Gabriel before it got destroyed by an earthquake in 1863.

I love Binondo so much! Specially during Chinese New Year and their feast. Thanks for sharing this, I am also planning to join some group that do day tour and food tour in Binondo.

I’ve never seen this shrine in Ongpin. Maybe I was too busy with the food rather than the other attractions.

Oh! I missed this place. We used to live near here. I never heard of that story though but it gave me goosebumps after reading it.
